Redesigning Tourism Management Using Hypothetical Scenario Valuation Based on Circular Economy Design Framework

This study investigates visitor preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for circular economy attributes in Bali’s tourism sector, segmenting tourists into three groups: 3R champions, circular supporters, and traditionalists. It focuses on four core circular economy design principles: design for longevity, design for service, design for reuse in manufacturing, and design for material recovery. The results reveal strong visitor preferences for sustainable tourism practices that reduce waste, support local artisans, and lower carbon emissions. To operationalize these principles, four hypothetical tourism scenarios were developed: (1) local transitioning support, highlighting the use of locally sourced materials and recycled crafts; (2) eco-friendly adoptive package, prioritizing carbon footprint reduction through integrated services and advanced recycling systems; (3) renewable-by-design experience, featuring accommodations with reused art and recyclable materials; and (4) circular tourism development, which integrates all circular economy attributes. These findings offer strategic insights for designing a more sustainable and resilient tourism model in Bali.
