摘要

Democratic education inevitably requires an understanding of what democracy means. Based on empirical examples from the Demokratiebildung im Sportverein (DeBiS), this article shows that democratic education measures in voluntary sports clubs possess a superficial consensus, which is expressed in fundamental support for democracy. However, this consensus conceals profound differences in the understanding of democracy and can cause implicit, sometimes contradictory assumptions to meet and potentially clash during practical work. Thus, this article outlines how different theories of democracy can be utilized to understand, reflect, and shape democratic education processes. In addition, the article provides educational resources that can support leaders’ and participants’ reflections of their own understanding of democracy and concrete ways to incorporate this into the design of democratic education measures in voluntary sports clubs.
