This article utilizes interviews to examine whether and which sense of belonging young male refuges can experience in sports clubs. Drawing on Pfaff-Czarnecka’s theoretical concept of “belonging” (
The findings show that participating in both competitive and non-competitive sports within club settings enables young refugees to experience different aspects of a sense of belonging. These experiences of belonging are a relevant requirement to cope with different developmental tasks in adolescence, which are more difficult for refugees than for peers without migration background. Due to diverse sports settings, differences in type and intensity of relationships arise in the context of club involvement. Several strategies that sports clubs can implement to increase the opportunities for refugees to experience a sense of belonging are discussed in relation to the different sports settings.
