<p>In Mexico, federal and state laws on human trafficking are rapidly changing and improving, yet little is known about the patterns of human trafficking investigations. Using secondary data that captures nine years’ worth of human trafficking investigations, this study provides an overview of criminal investigation trends after the Mexican government revised how state-level criminal investigations were classified, with a focus on human trafficking and kidnapping investigations. The results point toward an increase in human trafficking investigations filed under state jurisdiction when compared to federal jurisdiction, although patterns differ geographically across states. Additionally, human trafficking and kidnapping investigations appear to be moderately correlated in the sampled states. The results from this study promote discussion on the differences between federal and state investigations, including which states have higher investigative activity and how political corruption or forced displacement facilitates trafficking in persons. This paper offers a stronger grasp of where human trafficking is investigated across Mexico, and what strategies the Mexican criminal justice system can employ to deter human trafficking.</p>
