<p>Street gangs reflect conditions of structural disadvantage, but gentrification in some neighborhoods has reshaped urban neighborhood social structures in ways that are important for the social ties, interactions, and identities of neighborhoods and their gangs. In this study, we investigate how Chicago street gangs among four neighborhoods evolved amid prevailing trends of gentrification. Through the lens of “gang retreatism,” we use a mixed-methods analysis to describe how the presence and practices of gangs in gentrifying neighborhoods differ from those in neighborhoods that have not experienced gentrification, in that gangs have altered their visibility and behaviors in response to increased policing and a loss of social connection.</p>
