Empowering Malaysian SMEs through crowdfunding to enhance rural growth and sustainable development
摘要
Malaysian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role in economic growth, job creation, and social development, particularly in rural areas. However, many rural SMEs struggle to remain competitive because they lack the capacity to recover from setbacks, largely due to limited access to funding. Traditional banking systems require collateral, strong credit histories, and accessibility, which many rural entrepreneurs cannot provide. Crowdfunding offers a flexible and innovative alternative by enabling businesses to raise funds without complex procedures. This study examines how crowdfunding as a digital financial tool supports the growth of rural micro-SMEs in Malaysia. Using a case study approach, it focuses on the PEDULI project and draws on reports, workshop records, platform data, investor statistics, field visits, and stakeholder interviews. Thematic analysis highlights key factors such as digital literacy, financial knowledge, institutional trust, and entrepreneurs’ ability to manage crowdfunding campaigns. Alignment with broader development goals also strengthens outcomes. Findings reveal that when rural entrepreneurs receive practical training, improved market access, and culturally relevant financial tools, they transition from informal activities to structured investment-driven businesses. Crowdfunding emerges not merely as an alternative financing option but as a catalyst for rural empowerment. It reduces funding barriers and provides a sustainable pathway for the growth and resilience of rural Malaysian SMEs. Furthermore, it encourages community participation, strengthens networks, and builds long-term investor relationships that enhance business sustainability and resilience in evolving economic environments for rural enterprises overall development and inclusive growth.
