Enhancing skill-building education system in promoting self-reliant rural economy: a study of Jangal Mahal districts, West Bengal
摘要
The article focuses on the low educational attainment and livelihood crisis faced by tribal communities, such as the Santal, Savar, Lodha, and Kheria, in Jangal Mahal, West Bengal. We observe that a significant number of students leave school after the ninth standard to support their families financially. This study highlights the significance of skill-based professional courses and training programs in ensuring income, fostering identity, and promoting comprehensiveness and self-reliance among growing marginal communities. A semi-structured survey schedule was prepared to gather information from 576 respondents. A mixed-method approach was used for an in-depth analysis. This study employed Stepwise Regression as a quantitative technique, along with qualitative analysis, participatory observation, and a case study to understand the risks faced by marginalized people. The results indicate that the primary reasons for school dropouts are parents’ low income and limited opportunities for alternative livelihoods. The findings section shows intra-household intersectionality—gender bias between boys and girls as well as the power structures of the societal system. Therefore, it becomes essential to enhance capacity building among marginalized communities by enabling them to learn while earning opportunities are available after completing their school education through entrepreneurship development, innovative technologies, and skill-based development programs at low or no cost.
