Factors influencing farmers’ decisions to choose strands for minimizing rice post-harvest losses in Kilombero and Mbarali districts, Tanzania
摘要
This study examined factors influencing farmers’ adoption of strategies to minimize post-harvest losses (PHLs) in the rice value chain in Kilombero and Mbarali districts, Tanzania. A multistage random sampling approach was used to survey 300 farmers, with data analyzed through ordered logistic regression. Results show that the farm income and membership in farmer’s groups strongly influenced adoption, both significant at 0.01 level. Education of the household head and farm infrastructure were also significant at the 0.05 level, whereas farm size was significant at 0.1 level. Conversely, high costs of improved post-harvest technologies negatively affected adoption decisions. The study concludes that farmer education, increased income, better infrastructure, and affordable technologies are essential to reducing rice losses. Policy interventions should prioritize training, cost-effective technologies, and rural infrastructure investments to enhance adoption and food security.
