Rethinking failure in higher education: the essential role of setbacks in student development and career readiness
摘要
Failure plays a critical and often overlooked role in education by fostering resilience, creativity, and essential problem-solving skills, qualities crucial for success in both academic and professional realms. Encountering and reflecting on setbacks encourages a growth mindset, enabling students to embrace challenges as opportunities for personal and professional growth. However, policies that mandate universal passing in higher education risk removing failure as a developmental tool, potentially diminishing students’ ability to build these valuable skills. This study explores the unintended consequences of such policies, suggesting that they may weaken academic standards, devalue educational credentials, and leave graduates less prepared for complex, real-world demands. Emphasizing high academic expectations and incorporating constructive failure experiences can better prepare students to navigate adversity, fostering adaptable and resilient professionals poised to thrive in a competitive job market.
