Youth political socialization in Tigray, Ethiopia: alternative sources and their potential to challenge the dominant TPLF political culture
摘要
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the alternative sources of political socialization available to the youth in Tigray and how they have been potentially challenging and changing the dominant political culture of TPLF in the region. The study argues that despite TPLF’s long-standing political dominance in Tigray and its significant role in shaping the region’s political culture through strict means of political socialization, there exist alternative sources of political socialization that have been challenging and changing the prevailing political culture and reshaping the political outlook of the youth. The study aims to answer the question of what the available alternative sources of political socialization are for the youth in Tigray and their potential to challenge and change the dominant political culture of TPLF in the region. The study used qualitative research methodology and relied on primary and secondary sources of data. The primary data were collected through in-depth interviews and key informant interview methods of data collection, and a purposive sampling technique was employed to select the appropriate interviewees in this study. The findings were analyzed qualitatively using conceptual frameworks. The major finding of the study revealed that TPLF’s political culture, which was characterized by highly centralized party politics, lack of open-mindedness to diversified standpoints, an enigmatic political decision-making process, and suppression of democratic cultures, and utilized party-affiliated media outlets, community events, community-based organizations, education, and interpersonal networks as a major source of political socialization of the youth, has been challenged by alternative sources of political socialization such as social media, political parties, civil society organizations, independent media, cultural institutions (art and music), and youth-led movements at the grassroots level. These alternative sources of political socialization provide young people with access to diversified information, connection formation, and opportunities to engage in political campaigns and discussions. Therefore, the youth are now thinking outside of the traditional political box and being actively involved in the political affairs of their nation to reinforce political and social change.
