Perennial insecurity challenges and Nigeria’s military approach to eradicating extreme violence: evoking an e-counterinsurgency strategy
摘要
The paper examined whether violent extremism currently widespread in Nigeria’s sociopolitical space has been exacerbated by the sole use of military approach to address the security threats. Incessant fatal attacks, raging across almost all the geopolitical zones, have wantonly truncated economic development and peaceful coexistence. Literally, it exposed the poor administration of the security institutions that seem to have maintained a corrupt stance that led to the persistence and growth of terrorism. In this context, there is palpable fear that the spate of violence would, ultimately, push the country into a failed-state status. Consequently, the paper argued that the sole application of military option has been found wanting and requires viable alternatives. The failed/fragile state theory logically explained the tenets of the study while embracing the qualitative – descriptive method of data collection. Findings revealed that the sole kinetic option to combat violence has truncated the timely stoppage of insurgent terrorist groups and diehard criminals. Suggestively, the leaders of all militant groups should be summoned by the government for peaceful negotiations. Again, seeking foreign assistance is advocated and predicated upon embracing an e-counterinsurgency strategy, which is embedded in Artificial Intelligence technology to complement the existing military method.
