<p>The role of urban fruit trees in enhancing environmental sustainability, socio-economic resilience, and global food security has garnered growing global attention. However, their potential in promoting sustainable development, particularly within informal settlements, remains under-recognized. This study investigates local preferences and perceptions regarding the integration of fruit trees into urban landscapes in informal settlements in Kumasi, Ghana, to inform urban planning and sustainability strategies. Using Sawaba, one of the major informal settlements as a case study, the study addresses two key questions: how are fruit trees perceived in informal settlement, and what are the landscape preferences of residents for sustainability? The study employs a mixed-method approach including household surveys, interviews with 3 experts including the Head of the Department of Parks and Gardens, the Physical Planner from Asokore Mampong Municipality, and the Assembly Member of Sawaba, and scenario analysis (drawings of landscapes with distinct tree placements as graphical scenarios). The study found that the most identified fruit tree species were mango (25.9%), coconut (25.4%), and orange (22.8%). Respondents cited income generation (25.3%) and employment opportunities (22.3%) as the leading socio-economic benefits, environmental benefits included improved air quality (15.7%), provision of shade (15.5%), and beautification of the community (12.4%). Scenario analysis showed that the most preferred landscape scenario was trees planted in front of houses (56%), followed by trees planted throughout the area (20%), trees only at the back (13%), and no trees (11%). This study maintains that while recognizing these diverse landscape preferences, it is essential that city authorities undertake community sensitization campaigns on planting and protecting indigenous fruit tree species to enhance environmental and socio-economic outcomes in informal settlements.</p>
