<p>The influence of anthropogenic and natural driving forces has resulted in a remarkable change in vegetation cover in Bangladesh in recent years. This study explored the changes in vegetation cover and their driving forces in the Shibganj sub-district of Chapainawabganj district, Bangladesh, from 1990 to 2020. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was employed to analyse the changes in vegetation cover, while a qualitative study explored the underlying driving forces. The results (image analysis) showed a considerable shift in vegetation land cover, with an increase of 180.68 square kilometre (sq. km.) between 1990 and 2020, and 128.37 sq. km. between 2000 and 2020. Additionally, a qualitative study indicated that climatic and hydrological conditions, alongside several economic, technological, and institutional factors, were the major driving forces of these changes. Moreover, mango farming has increased by 108.5 sq. km. over the last two decades, owing to minimal water requirements, ideal agro-environmental conditions, and high commercial demand. The data indicate that the transition from conventional food grain production to mango farming has contributed to an overall increase in vegetation cover in this moderately drought-prone region. This study sheds light on how natural and manmade variables influence land use and vegetation dynamics.</p>
