From challenges to opportunities: uncovering spatial patterns and key determinants of sustainable livelihood development in rural West Bengal
摘要
This study explores sustainable livelihood development to foster economic stability, social equity, environmental sustainability, and overall human development, focusing on the spatial distribution and determinants of rural livelihood conditions in Islampur C.D. Block, Uttar Dinajpur District, West Bengal. A Sustainable Livelihood Development Index (SLDI) was meticulously crafted, integrating 72 indicators across 19 sub-components of human, natural, financial, physical, and social capital from the Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified key indicators for each SLDI component, revealing significant spatial variations among villages. Amalijhari village achieved the highest SLDI score (0.847), while Tangipokar village scored the lowest (0.127). The first 15 principal components explained 84.77% of the observed variance. Spearman’s correlation analysis showed significant positive correlations between the SLDI and the human capital index (HCI), natural capital index (NCI), financial capital index (FCI), physical capital index (PCI), and social capital index (SCI). These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers to develop effective strategies aimed at enhancing sustainable livelihoods in the region. The study identifies that 40 villages are situated in the low to very low class, with SLDI values below 0.272, covering 195.47 square kilometers (59.33%) of the study area. These areas are home to approximately 197,000 people, constituting 63.73% of the total population. The study suggested a series of policy interventions essential for tackling the multifaceted inequalities in Islampur C.D. Block, concentrating on human, natural, financial, physical, and social capital. These insights will be invaluable for policymakers in devising effective strategies to address the existing issues related to sustainable livelihood development within the study area.
