Metallurgical characterization of the coins of the Sangama and Tuluva dynasties of Vijayanagara
摘要
Copper coins belonging to the Vijayanagara Empire, which ruled the Deccan Plateau region of South India, were excavated. Based on the inscriptions on both their obverse and reverse sides, the coins were identifiedwith the respective kings during whose time they were minted. Later, the coins were subjected to chemical and structural characterizations studies to understand their elemental composition and microstructure. X-ray diffraction studies, followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopic analysis, helped identify the alloying elements and their percentage concentrations. Scanning electron microscopic observation of the polished sections of the coins revealed the alloy microstructure. The results provide important insights into understanding the coin-minting technology of the historically well-known Vijayanagara Empire.
