摘要

The history of scientific expeditions to the Lahaul and Spiti region, Himachal Pradesh, India, dates back to the early 1820s. Early travellers already recognized the fascinating nature of this remote Himalayan–Tibetan region and documented their findings in comprehensive travelling logs, reports, sketches, photographs, and maps. Their accounts provide valuable insights into geological and geomorphological peculiarities and cultural, climatic changes over time. The findings of such historical texts and illustrations from the past two centuries are summarized, and the work of pioneers in their fields is emphasized. For selected sites in the Chandra and Spiti Valleys of the Lahaul and Spiti district, the implications for contemporary studies of geology, geomorphology, and climate are discussed. The historical reports, travel logs, and photographs are valuable sources of information for reconstructing past geologic events.
