<p>More than eighty years back, Meghnad Saha planned to build India’s first cyclotron within the Department of Physics of the University of Calcutta. The project went through many ups and downs. Saha attracted donors and enlisted the support of a number of young enthusiasts. He established the Institute of Nuclear Physics within the Department of Physics which later became an independent institute. We review the history of the cyclotron and the Institute from the records of the University of Calcutta.</p>
