Effects of millets on diabetes and gut microbiome: a narrative review
摘要
Prediabetes is a condition where the blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Research shows that dietary changes, such as reducing processed sugars and carbohydrates while increasing fibre-rich foods and healthy fats, can prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes. Nutrient-dense millets, known for their diverse phytochemical profiles and low glycemic index, are gaining popularity as potential treatments for prediabetes. Furthermore, recent research has offered a new perspective on dietary interventions by emphasising the crucial role that gut microbiota play in metabolic health. This review aims to summarise the effects of millets on prediabetes and glycemic index and to understand their role in modulating gut microbiota, with potential implications for targeted dietary interventions in preventing type 2 diabetes.
