<p>Underutilized plants, although considered neglected or orphan species, play a significant role in alleviating global food and nutritional security by providing an alternative food source. These crops play a vital role in the prevention of environmental sustainability and human diseases. Our study aims to evaluate the current status of the underutilized species in Chandigarh and its periphery. A detailed survey was done in rural and urban areas to determine the ecological status of species in terms of distribution, importance value index (IVI), and ecological indices. Our field survey included a total of 63 plant species in both the rural and urban areas of Chandigarh. These plant species were comprised of 60 genera, belonging to 33 families. The IVI values of underutilized plants ranged between 3.2 and 27.03; <i>Oxalis corniculata</i> (27.03) had the maximum IVI. The number of underutilized plant species observed in the rural area was 28, whereas 14 species were observed in the urban areas, with fruit as the major edible part. The ecological indices like richness (12–19) and diversity (1.38–2.70) indicated that the rural areas comprised better and broader distribution of underutilized plants in comparison to the urban areas (richness 11–13 and diversity 1.13–1.71). These species have high potential to be utilized as future crops as they are cost-effective, nutrient-rich, and beneficial in preventing various human diseases. Encouraging such research for the development and popularization of these neglected crops could be beneficial in the future hunger crisis.</p>
