Phytosociology and carbon dynamics of macrophyte species of selected water bodies of urban area of Ambikapur township, Surguja, Chhattisgarh, India

Macrophytes species performs various ecological services within the aquatic system. Diversity of species is also an important factor in maintaining ecosystem health. The present study is an attempt to investigate the diversity, phytosociological attributes of macrophytes along with their potential role in carbon sequestration and CO2 mitigation under urban setup. Seven study sites were selected for the present study and stratified random sampling was adopted for the study. For phytosociological enumeration 1 m × 1 m sized 5 quadrates was laid in the respective study sites. For estimation of Biomass and C stock the rooted hydrophytes were collected by uprooting them from the soil substratum with utmost care and the floating macrophytes were collected through net with suitable mesh size. Results reveal that Teucrium scorodonia reported higher density, relative density and abundance value and lowest value was recorded by Pistia. Stellaria media (L.) vill. reported higher biomass, C stock and CO2 mitigation potential value among all the species. Higher Shannon index value was reported from Sanker wetalnd among all the study sites reflecting higher level of species diversity in comparison to other sites. Species richness was higher in the Mahamaya wetland in terms of higher Simpson index value. Growth of species such as Stellaria media (L.) vill. can be an effective strategy towards reducing CO2 load in the ambient atmosphere of the urban set up and thus the respective water body may act as potential carbon sink. This could be an effective strategy for combating climate change under urban set up.
