<p>It was established in our previous work that oligo-chitosan increases the yield of wheat under field conditions. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to investigate if the oligosaccharides of alginate and chitosan produced by gamma ray has any effect on the physiological and biochemical parameters in wheat seedling. Accordingly, 7d-old seedlings were sprayed with the elicitors prepared from alginate and chitosan irradiated with gamma ray. The effect of this treatment was investigated 14&#xa0;days later by studying the seedling growth, relative water content, photosynthesis, chlorophyll-<i>a</i> (<i>Chl</i>-<i>a</i>) fluorescence and the activity of a few enzymes. The treatment increased the shoot length, <i>Chl</i>-<i>a</i> &amp; total chlorophyll content, rate of net photosynthesis, rate of transpiration and total sugar content. The treatments, on the other hand, reduced the minimum <i>Chl</i>-<i>a</i> fluorescence. In addition, the treatment also increased the activity of a few enzymes viz., phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, sucrose synthase, amylase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase, chitinases and β-1,3 glucanase. These observations suggest that oligosaccharides of alginate and chitosan have broader effect on the growth as well as development of wheat seedling ranging from the energy metabolism to the plant defence. Probably, this action of the oligosaccharides was responsible for the increase in the yield of wheat in our earlier study.</p>
