Assessment of runoff using GIS based SCS-CN approach on Badanadi sub watershed of Rushikulya basin

The lack of surface runoff data for ungauged basin like Badanadi River, a significant tributary of the Rushikulya River presents a serious challenge for hydrologists working in Southern Odisha, India. A study was carried out to address this issue using GIS (Geographic Information System) architecture to prepare different maps such soil classification maps, hydrological soil group map, LULC (Land use and Land Cover) map, Thiessen’s Polygon rainfall map of Badanadi subbasin. By using Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number (SCS-CN) approach, the Curve Numbers (CN) associates to each subwatershed of the Badanadi river were produced and the runoff associated to each subwatershed of Badanadi for the rainfall from year 2000 to 2020 were estimated. From the result, a strong correlation R2 was found between Average Monthly Rainfall and Average Monthly Runoff of the order of 0.84–0.97. The annual runoff was assessed about 729.66 million cubic meters, 95.5% of the volume of which related to monsoon flow. The observed runoff through SCS-CN compared with the result of hydrological SWAT (Soil Water Assessment Tool) model. According to the results, the SCS-CN method is more appropriate than the SWAT model with limited inputs and is more successful in forecasting monthly runoff in comparison of SWAT model. Thus, the SCS-CN approach united with GIS proved to be useful for estimating runoff, especially in ungauged basins with limited data, like Rushikulya River Basin.
