The origin, categorization, and therapeutic uses of insect antimicrobial peptides (AMPs)

Host defence peptides (HDPs), also known as antimicrobial peptides, have drawn a lot of attention in the last two decades as potential immune system components. Over the past 20 years, a sizable number of these peptides have been recovered from a variety of insects, including ants, spiders, fruit flies, and silkworms. More than 2000 AMPs from plants and animals have been extracted and identified. In both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and some viruses, their amino acid composition, charge, and size allow them to cross the outer barriers, produce non-specific pores, and harm or kill the microorganisms. Insect AMPs are cationic and are composed of less than 120 amino acids. By breaking through the microbial membrane, these insect peptides exhibit an antibacterial impact, thereby preventing the emergence of drug-resistant microorganisms. This review’s additional narrative will help to establish a perception of insect AMPs and clarify the antimicrobial activity in social science.
