Policies driving India’s innovation-driven growth in science and technology: pathway to progressive excellence over the past decade and roadmap to Viksit Bharat-2047

India is strategically positioning itself as a global leader in science, technology, and innovation, a vision deeply inspired by the clarion call of Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan—celebrating and nurturing the innovative spirit and scientific curiosity of its youth– under the visionary leadership of Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Over the past decade, the nation has established a robust strategic policy framework effectively translating the vision into mission-mode initiatives. These mission-driven programs, coupled with strategic investments and institutional reforms that reflect India’s unique approach to innovation, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance have demonstrably accelerated its scientific trajectory. The Union Budget for the fiscal year 2025–2026 further galvanizes this momentum through landmark initiatives, notably the establishment of a dedicated 1 trillion Indian Rupees (1 Lakh Crore) Research, Development, & Innovation (RDI) Fund. This significant allocation is complemented by targeted schemes designed to strengthen institutional research capacity, enhance the overall research and development ecosystem, and drive technological advancements across key sectors. These policy interventions are poised to significantly reshape India’s research landscape, fostering long-term sustainable growth and enhanced self-reliance, in strategically important areas. By prioritizing the translation of research from laboratory to market through enhanced collaboration between industry, academia and government, India is making tangible progress towards its ambitious vision of Viksit Bharat 2047—a developed India characterized by innovation, scientific excellence, and technological leadership. This national endeavor emphasizes a unique indigenous perspective to address both domestic and global challenges by leveraging and further stimulating local capabilities in science and technology.
