GYxT as an effective selection approach for identifying superior bean genotypes based on yield and nutritional traits under irrigated conditions of Western Himalayas

Selection for improving economic traits is accomplished through multi-trait evaluations across environments. Conventional multivariate analysis, despite being a powerful approach for multi-trait selection also suffers from subjectivity and evolutionary diversity. In this paper, we present the effectiveness of genotype by yield*trait (GYxT) biplot method in selection of common bean genotypes on the basis of 10 yield and eight seed nutritional traits. The main aim of present study was to identify the desirable combinations of higher yield and better-quality traits using GYxT method to decide overall genotypic superiority that combines better yield attributes and superior nutritional quality. Our analysis was based on evaluation of 25 bean genotypes for 18 traits across six environments. The overall genotypic superiority was decided based on the yield-trait combinations and trait profiles (i.e., strengths and weaknesses). The results revealed that GT biplot explained less total variation (35.6%) as compared to GYxT biplot (77%). In GT analysis, seed yield was significantly correlated with pods per plant and seeds per pod. Among nutritional traits, seed iron and zinc were positively correlated with phenol, flavonoids, and starch. In GYxT, the positive correlations of GT analysis were retained, and seed yield showed strong correlation with iron, zinc, starch, phenols, flavonoids and phytic acid content. Thus, GYxT analysis extracts greater amount of variation and retains the positive correlations of GT. It combines trait superiority for identifying genotypes that have desirable combinations of yield and quality.
