<p>China’s post-1978 reform and opening up started a process of engaging in a US-dominated global governance system. Nonetheless, the current Trumpist global policies have featured a dual trend of selective withdrawal from the system in general and decoupling with China in particular. Applying a three-dimensional framework of relative strength, institutional capability, and crisis-induced opportunity windows, this paper argues that despite an apparent tipping point of China-US relation toward equal footing, China’s responses to Trumpism will remain to promote gradual reforms and incremental changes of the existing global regime. A painful process of mutual recognition and compromise will evolve and shape the future global order.</p>
