<p>Trump’s rejection of the rules-based international order and the US moving away from its close ally Europe are placing enormous pressure on the European Union. Economically, the EU, like the rest of the world, is confronted with a US administration using American market power as a geoeconomic weapon. The EU is ready to take Trump’s attempt to tear down the multilateral order as an opportunity to address its own immense need for reform and to rediscover itself as a “geopolitical union.” This regards both external security and internal economic reforms, while refraining from tackling constitutional and fundamental governance reforms, due to the lack of political will and consensus among Member States. Focussing instead on political reforms is a pragmatic approach, which could, however, fail should Europe’s right-wing populist parties, fostered by ‘Trumpism’, come to power in large EU countries.</p>
