<p>In this paper, I ask if and how historians should use history writing as a form of political action, and what role historians should take in memory politics. In other words, what role should they play in the struggle over collective understandings of the past (Wang, <CitationRef CitationID="CR41">2018</CitationRef>, p. 43), increasingly mobilised as they are by political agents to achieve various political agenda (such as identity shaping, legitimising authority, etc.).I will take on this task by investigating J. G. A. Pocock’s (1924–2023) multiplicity of narratives in comparison with Liu Yizheng’s (柳詒徵, 1880–1956) virtue of historians. I argue that the political roles historians can assume are multifaceted, due to differences in regime types and in the notion of “politics”. However, empathy can be a political virtue that are beneficial for any political role historians may wish to assume with their history writing, regardless of regime types.</p>

摘要

In this paper, I ask if and how historians should use history writing as a form of political action, and what role historians should take in memory politics.
