Biological Reconstruction for Malignant Bone Tumors Using Recycled Autograft: Early Outcomes from a Northern India Tertiary Center

To evaluate short-term radiological, functional, and oncological outcomes of biological reconstruction using recycled autografts for malignant bone tumors for extracorporeal radiotherapy (ECRT) and liquid nitrogen (LN) techniques.
MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted on 14 patients (ECRT = 11, LN = 3) undergoing limb salvage reconstruction following wide tumor resection. Outcomes were assessed using the International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS) radiological evaluation method and the Musculo-Skeletal Tumor Society score (MSTS) functional outcome at 6 and 12 months.
ResultsMean MSTS scores were similar between groups (ECRT = 24 ± 1.5; LN = 27.6 ± 0.6). ISOLS scoring at 6 and 12 months was statistically insignificant. Radiological union was achieved in all ECRT and two LN cases. No infections, fractures, or implant failures occurred. One LN case showed nonunion and two ECRT cases had local recurrence due to primary tumor aggressiveness, none statistically significant.
ConclusionECRT and LN recycled autografts provide comparable and good early functional and radiological outcomes with low complication rates, supporting their utility as effective, economical options for limb salvage in malignant bone tumors.
