Natural Non-carbohydrate Prebiotic Candidate: In Vitro and In Vivo Insights into Their Therapeutic Potential
摘要
Prebiotics are food ingredients and natural components of a balanced diet. Prebiotics modulate the growth and/or the activity of beneficial gut microbiota and affect distant organs with a wide array of benefits for human health. This updated review aims at unraveling the different types of prebiotics, exploring the non-carbohydrate substances like polyphenols and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that exert a prebiotic-like effect. Furthermore, the current review summarizes and evaluates the health benefits of prebiotics in the treatment of several diseases such as inflammatory bowel disorders, colorectal cancer, fatty liver disease, obesity, and associated metabolic diseases like insulin resistance, regulation of lipid metabolism, and controlling immunity. In addition, the present review sheds light on prebiotics’ safety considerations, possible side effects, and drug interactions.
