Effects of Yucca Genus Plants on Enteropathogenic Bacteria and Parasites

Bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. or parasites such as Giardia lamblia and Eimeria spp. pose a significant global public health challenge, especially with the escalating antimicrobial resistance. This urgency underscores the need for effective alternatives to treat infections. Plant-derived antimicrobials, with their long history of use in medicine for hepatoprotective, antitumor, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, are gaining attention. Species of Yucca, Asparagaceae, known for its immunomodulatory and growth-promoting attributes in animals, emerges as a promising source of natural antimicrobial agents. This work aims to showcase the antimicrobial potential of Yucca plants, particularly against enteropathogens. Research has shown that Y. schidigera Roezl ex Ortigies, Y. gigantean Lem., and Y. baccata Torr. have antimicrobial properties mainly attributed to saponins, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. In vitro studies reveal that Y. baccata extracts exhibit remarkable antibacterial activity against E. coli, Pseudomona aeruginosa, and Salmonella Typhimurium. Moreover, Yucca extracts have shown promise in combating parasitic infections in gerbils and poultry. However, these findings underscore the need for further exploration of the full antimicrobial potential of Yucca plants, optimization of the methods used in extracting its components, and evaluation of its safety and efficacy in clinical practice. This review not only highlights the potential of the Yucca plant as a valuable source of natural antimicrobial agents but also strongly advocates for continued research to address the challenges posed by microbial resistance to currently available treatments.
