<p>Several animals use abandoned social wasp nests (Vespidae: Polistinae) for shelter and reproduction. However, there are no records of birds engaging in this behavior. Therefore, the objective of this study is to document the use of an abandoned social wasp nest for bird nesting in an anthropic environment. We recorded an event where a gray tanager, <i>Thraupis sayaca</i> (Linnaeus, 1766), nested inside an abandoned nest of the Epiponini tribe at the school farm of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Minas Gerais, Campus Bambuí. The bird’s nest contained two eggs and a chick within the wasp nest structure. Birds may benefit from the nest structure of the insects as protection against predators and parasites, or due to the thermal insulation provided by it. Further observations are necessary to understand why <i>T. sayaca</i> and possibly other bird species use wasp nests for nesting, and whether this behavior is occasional or recurrent.</p>
