Complementary SVPWM strategy for neutral-point voltage balancing in three-level inverters

Three-level inverters (TLIs) are being increasingly adopted due to their advantages such as reduced output voltage harmonics and improved efficiency. However, TLIs suffer from the potential issue of neutral point voltage imbalance. The conventional space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm cannot maintain neutral point voltage balance under overmodulation and low power factor conditions. In this paper, a quantitative analysis of the effects of high modulation index and low power factor conditions on neutral point voltage balance is conducted, and the fluctuation of the neutral point voltage is mathematically modeled. Based on the mathematical analysis, a new SVPWM algorithm is proposed, and a general solution for neutral point voltage imbalance is provided based on the proposed algorithm. The accuracy of the mathematical model and the performance of the proposed algorithm have been validated through simulation and experimental results.
