Lake Kitezh (Antarctica): the first data on the sedimentation rate for the last 150 years

The lake sediments are used for reconstructing the conditions of their formation and development. An important aspect of this work is assessing the age of the sediments and determining the sedimentation rate. The analysis of data on the accumulation of isotopes 137Cs and 210Pb in the sediment core of Lake Kitezh (Antarctica) made it possible to estimate the sedimentation rate over the past 150 years. The results showed that this parameter varied from 0.3 to 1.3 mm/year. Thus, during the 21st century, the rate of sedimentation in the lake has increased. The comparison of data on the sedimentation rate in Lake Kitezh and the vertical distribution of Pb, Cd, and Sb indicates that since the mid-20th century, there has been a slight increase in the influx of elements into the lake. A literature review suggested that this fact may be related to the polar research station’s functioning and the long-range atmospheric transport of pollutants.
