Sedimentary characteristics of gravity flow and its significance for exploration: a case study of the Chang 6 Member of Triassic Yanchang formation in Ordos Basin, NW China

To clarify the gravity flow sedimentary characteristics of the Chang 6 Member in the study area in Ordos Basin, a study was conducted on lithofacies, lithofacies associations, and sedimentary features using core samples, casting thin sections, and other data. The study reveals the following findings. i. Gravity flow deposits in the study area can be classified into five types: sandy debris flows, muddy debris flows, turbidity currents, sliding, and slumping. These can be further subdivided into 12 lithofacies, namely LF1–LF12. ii. Six lithofacies associations (LA1–LA6) were been identified in the study area, representing different sedimentary environments. iii. The sublacustrine fan is mainly developed in the study area, which can be further divided into distal fan, medial fan, and proximal fan subfacies and can be further subdivided into main channel, main channel margin, distributary channel, distributary channel margin, interchannel, turbidite sheet sand, and lacustrine mud microfacies. Among those microfacies, the main channel microfacies and distributary channel microfacies are the main areas for hydrocarbon accumulation in the study area, while the interchannel microfacies and lacustrine mud microfacies can serve as good source rocks.
