摘要

This study describes how to fabricate carbon textiles having orthogonal-through-the-thickness (OT) and layer-to-layer (LTL) patterns using a narrow band needle loom. The relation between weaving patterns and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) based on these textiles are also covered. To fabricate stable textiles, the weft densities of OT and LTL textiles was optimized to 14 picks/cm and 18 picks/cm, respectively. OT textile had channels for facilitating the resin flow. In the case of LTL textile, wet coating and polyester yarn were applied for weaving to minimize yarn breakage and wear due to its high weft density. Both textiles were then processed by liquid silicon infiltration (LSI). The flexural strength, elastic modulus, and strain energy density (SED) of LTL-C/SiC were double those of OT-C/SiC. These increments were attributed to the high weft density and mild undulation of binder yarns in LTL textile. In addition, LTL-C/SiC exhibited crack deflection, through which the yarns effectively carried the load, resulting in reduced delamination in the transverse direction.
