<p>This article argues that youth political participation cannot be fully understood through conventional or institutional frameworks alone, as it is deeply shaped by structural inequalities, socio-economic conditions, and young people’s own lived experiences. Adopting a critical pedagogical perspective, the study reflects on power dynamics, challenges hegemonic practices, and highlights young people’s agency in redefining what counts as participation. In doing so, it emphasizes the need to conceptualize contemporary reconfigurations of participation through the voices and perspectives of young people themselves. Based on a qualitative methodology, focused on four interviews, six life stories and four focus groups, the study draws on the perspectives of 40 young people from different profiles in two Catalan communities. The article seeks to broaden existing understandings of youth participation by emphasizing its multidimensional and dynamic nature. It contributes to ongoing debates on how participation can foster empowerment, social justice, and democratic renewal, while also acknowledging the barriers young people face and the opportunities that emerge within their specific social and territorial contexts.</p>
