A Dynamic Framework for Promoting Rights-Based Youth Allyship
摘要
This article explores the potential of youth allyship in the promotion and protection of human rights in communities. The study, undertaken over 12 months in collaboration with a human rights education organization, Equitas, points to the messiness and complexity of allyship. Based on focus groups and participatory activities with youth workers and marginalized and racialized youth in three cities across Canada, we identify allyship as branching out into five dimensions: (1) building relationships, (2) practicing reflection and learning, (3) leveraging and sharing power, (4) enabling spaces for participation, and (5) collaborating across networks. Illustrating them each as gears in motion indicates that allyship is dynamic in relation to a specific context and human rights issue. We refer to a rights-based youth allyship framework to support youth workers’ perpetual learning, action, and accountability. This informed the creation of an HRE tool for youth workers to assess their progress in working through each dimension.
