Is restocking a viable conservation strategy for the Bawean deer? A GPS-based assessment

The Bawean deer (Axis kuhlii) is a critically endangered cervid endemic to Bawean Island, Indonesia, with fewer than 250 mature individuals remaining in the wild. Despite its conservation status, empirical data on the post-release performance of captive-born individuals are lacking. Between 2023 and 2025, we released nine adult deer (six males, three females) from two captive-breeding facilities into forest habitats and monitored their movements using GPS telemetry. We used 9,819 GPS fixes over 1,533 tracking days to estimate home range and habitat selection. Home range estimates differed among methods, with mean annual sizes at the 95% isopleth of 351 ha (Minimum Convex Polygon), 215 ha (Kernel Density Estimation, KDE), and 61 ha (Local Convex Hull, LoCoH). All individuals established stable home ranges following release. No significant seasonal differences were detected, whereas males generally occupied larger areas than females. Several individuals used unprotected forest patches and plantations. Habitat selection analyses indicated selection for secondary forest and dense understory vegetation, while agricultural areas, settlements, and mangroves were avoided. One mortality due to snaring highlighted ongoing anthropogenic risks. Camera trap records documented reproduction by released individuals. These results provide the first telemetry-based evidence that captive-born A. kuhlii can survive, reproduce, and establish spatially structured activity ranges in natural habitats. Our findings support population reinforcement while emphasizing habitat management beyond protected areas and reducing anthropogenic threats.
