Describing the Contextualization of Cultural Products Based on Semiotics: From A Theoretical Model to an Ontology
摘要
This study delineates the contextualization of cultural products, focusing on their social and cultural contextual dimensions in the light of a semiotic perspective. It borrows the general theoretical model of the social production of the semiotic (that is, the culture) and the typology of the contextualization of texts applied to all cultural products. This is because, for semiotics, any cultural product that conveys meaning is a semiotic text that can be examined and interpreted like a written text. This perspective sheds light on indiscernible aspects of social activities and signification processes, allowing the identification of external non-textual factors that influence the signification of cultural products. Onto-Semiotics DCCP (Describing the Contextualization of Cultural Product) was created to encode these factors in a machine-readable form. This ontology defines a lightweight vocabulary of high-level concepts. The conceptual model of such an ontology can be exploited by context-aware systems so that they can extract, interpret, and use information about the context of cultural products to serve the given information needs. In other words, the proposed theory-driven ontology becomes a valuable tool for intelligent machines, as it enhances their semantic understanding by incorporating information that describes the social and cultural contextualization of cultural products.
