Revitalizing the rice by using chemical fungicides and adjustment of date of sowing against false smut of rice disease

Rice false smut (FS), caused by Ustilaginoidea virens, is an economically important disease of rice, which has emerged as a major pathogen owing to climate change. Although numerous management strategies have been employed previously, limited research has been conducted on the role of plant growth stage on disease development. Considering these impediments, a study was designed to evaluate fungicides and plant defence promotors, under different dates of sowing, for their effect on pathogen growth suppression. For in-vitro studies, different fungicides, viz., Difenoconazole (25% EC), Carbendazim (50% WP), Tebuconazole (25% EC) and Trifloxystrobin (25% WG), were evaluated following poison food technique. For field studies, different fungicides viz., Difenoconazole (25% EC), Carbendazim (50% WP), Tebuconazole (25.0% EC) and Trifloxystrobin (25% WG), and growth promoters viz., isonicotinic acid, acibenzolar – S methyl, salicyclic acid and β-Aminobutyric acid (BABA) at a concentration of 1mM, were used. MTU 7029 (Swarna), a susceptible rice variety was used for in-vivo studies which were inoculated by spraying of pathogen immediately after panicle emergence. The inoculated pathogen was confirmed as Ustilaginoidea virens based on morphological characters and rDNA sequences. In-vitro studies revealed highest mycelial inhibition (88.433%) in Difenconazole treated plates whereas, the least mycelial inhibition was observed in Tebuconazole (69.030%) treated plates. The pooled data of field studies revealed Difenconazole to be the most effective among the treatments with highest disease reduction (94.152%), while and the lowest disease reduction was observed in Isonicotinic acid treated plots (47.391%). When time of sowing was considered, July sown plants gave the best results as compared to other months suggesting early sown rice can escape false smut disease resulting in higher yield. The outcomes of the study can be used to formulate improved rice crop calendars and IPDM practices under climate resilient farming initiatives.
