Influence of modified atmospheric storage conditions on seed longevity and health of maize genotypes (Zea mays L.)

The present investigation was conducted at Seed Research Laboratory, National Seed Project, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, from September 2021 to June 2022, aimed to know the impact of modified atmospheric gaseous storage on seed viability and health of maize genotypes. The findings of the research revealed that a modified atmospheric gaseous combination of 20% N2 + 0% O2 + 80% CO2 (T2) resulted in significantly highest seed germination (90.67%) with a lower percentage of seed infection (5.33%) compared to the control (T1) which exhibited germination per cent (85.00%) and a seed infection rate of (10.22%), respectively. Furthermore, concerning hybrid and parental lines, the hybrid exhibited significantly higher seed germination (89.64%) with a lower percentage of seed infection (6.83%) compared to parental lines after 10 months of storage. These results underscore the potential utility of modified atmospheric storage technology as a safe and eco-friendly alternative to chemical for maintaining seed quality during storage.
