The green yield for silage and its quality in the feed value of triticale varieties

There has recently been a surge of interest in incorporating triticale (Triticosecale x Wittm.) into forage programs. It combines the productivity and nutritional value of the wheat genome with the abiotic and biotic stress tolerance biomass potential of rye. It is one of the most interesting winter cereals due to its quality-quantity potential as whole-crop cereal silage. During four growing seasons, the green yields of several triticale types and the most crucial nutritional characteristics of silage were investigated. Four triticale varieties were tested: Hungaro, Dimenzio, GK Szemes, and GK Maros. The varieties produced an average green yield of 16.6–26.3 t/ha with a dry matter content of 30% from the first sampling date. Green yield increased the most dynamically at the second sampling date (BBCH 49), reaching 31.2 t/ha and 30.1 t/ha, respectively. The best yields were recorded between 28.1 and 34.4 t/ha at the third harvest date (BBCH 51). Variations in digestibility, composition, and fiber content were observed. Early sample (BCCH 45, where the ear measures 4–6 cm in the boot) can yield a crude protein content that is favourable. An increasing aNDFom value (from 533.1 to 581.6 g/kg DM) and a consistent decline in fiber digestibility (from 70.2 to 55.8%) were linked to the lengthening of the sampling period (BBCH 45–51: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sampling), which is unfavorable for silage quality. The best fibre digestibility (NDFd48) was measured at the first sampling (BBCH 45) to be 67.4–73.2 percent. Conclusion: while triticale harvested later (BBCH 51–58) may be better suited for beef cattle and dairy heifers, while it can be an excellent feed for high-yielding dairy herds when harvested early (BBCH 45–49).
