Nutritional comparison of barley doubled haploid progenies with their parents

Macro and micronutrients are essential for human growth and development. Focusing this importance, a field and Lab study was undertaken to investigate the variability and availability for trace elements such as Zn, Fe, Se, Mn, Cu with maximum available ratio of starch properties like Amylose and Amylopectin among 97 barley DHs along with their parents Steptoe’ (CI15229) and ‘Morex’ (CI15773). Many DH (doubled haploid) progenies were identified which possessed great availability and variability for grain Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Se content along with amylose and amylopectin ratio as compared to their parents. The tested grain nutrient concentration in DH lines averaged from 0.031 mg kg−1to 59.4 mg kg−1during the study year of 2017–18; while, their parents averaged from 0.028 mg kg−1 to 43.8 mg kg−1. In the case of starch properties, the same type of difference was observed. During the year 2018–19, grain nutrient concentration averaged from 0.042 mg kg−1to 59.2 mg kg−1; while, parents of DHs were from 0.031 mg kg−1 to 40.6 mg kg−1. Among all these grain nutrients, DHs barely showed more variability for selenium concentration as compared to the other four elements. Results indicated that 97 barley DH lines showed great variability and diversity for selenium concentration (± 0.016–0.069 mg kg−1 with average ± 0.042 mg kg−1). It is also concluded that the amylose/amylopectin ratio in barley DHs had great variation. Out of 97 analyzed progenies, 37 DHs produced normal content of amylose (20–30%); while, ten progenies had more than 30% of the apparent amylase content. Our results indicated that the DHs had considerable variation for all five elements (Fe, Zn, Se, Mn, Cu) along with amylose and amylopectin ratio compared to their parents, which not only provide some useful information about the difference in the nutrient concentration and amount of amylose and amylopectin content among these DH progenies, but also offered some prospect of using selected lines for barley quality improvement.
