Seasonal dynamics of foliar arthropod communities on Prunus Serotina (Ehrh.) in Mexican temperate forests

This study aimed to characterize the foliar arthropod community associated with Prunus serotina, focusing on trophic guild composition, diversity indices, and foliar herbivory levels across two contrasting climatic seasons in Veracruz, Mexico. Fifteen 20 × 20 m plots were established containing P. serotina trees, four of which were seasonally sampled for arthropods and foliar herbivory. Arthropod abundance was significantly higher during the wet season, whereas diversity peaked in the dry season. Hemiptera were the dominant order during the dry season, whereas Coleoptera and Lepidoptera prevailed in the wet season. Foliar herbivory reached a maximum of 4% over the study period. These findings indicate that seasonal climatic variation strongly influences arthropod community structure and trophic guild distribution, shaping herbivore activity and plant–insect interactions in temperate forest ecosystems. The observed variation in trophic guild structure, herbivore abundance, and herbivory intensity highlights the importance of preserving seasonal climatic patterns and maintaining native vegetation heterogeneity. Consequently, conservation strategies and forest management practices should prioritize the protection of native understory species and incorporate seasonal phenological and trophic shifts to sustain biodiversity and ecosystem function.
