摘要

We selectively review Masa Fujita’s work in spatial economics. We first show how he defined the research agenda during several decades and was at the origin of the key transitions of the field during his time. Second, we highlight the enduring legacy of much of his work. Third, we argue that his ultimate intellectual goal for the field has not been achieved yet. However, his work remains a key source of inspiration to develop a more complete theory of agglomeration, access, and land, where the size and spacing of cities are endogenously determined together with their urban structure.
