From Weed to Medicine: Policy and Industrial Prospects for Bidens Pilosa in Environmental and Reproductive Health
摘要
Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae) is a cosmopolitan weed commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, often dismissed as an agricultural nuisance. However, mounting scientific evidence reveals its exceptional phytochemical richness and broad pharmacological potential. The plant exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and reproductive-enhancing properties and attributes that could be harnessed to mitigate the adverse effects of environmental toxicants such as Bisphenol A (BPA), pesticides, and heavy metals. This paper explores the opportunities for transforming Bidens pilosa from an overlooked weed into a strategic herbal and pharmaceutical resource. It outlines its bioactive compounds, mechanisms of action against environmental and reproductive toxicity, and its potential roles in environmental remediation and public health enhancement. Furthermore, it discusses policy and industrial pathways for its valorization, ranging from cultivation and standardization to product development and commercialization. The paper advocates for a multi-sectorial framework integrating research, innovation, biodiversity conservation, and public policy to reposition Bidens pilosa as a tool for sustainable development, health protection, and economic empowerment.
