<p>Protected Areas (PAs) are repositories of native biodiversity that serve as natural filters against biological invasions. Unfortunately, these areas, envisioned for safeguarding biodiversity are also grappling with the disruptive impacts of invasive species. A recent assessment of the Management Effective Evaluation of the Indian PAs indicates the invasion of exotic plant species poses the greatest threat to PAs across the country. This communication highlights the state of knowledge on plant invasion in the PAs across the 10 Biogeographic Zones of India and research priorities to explore the area and species specific issues. This review also focuses on the directionality and prospects of past and ongoing research, underlining the knowledge gaps for future research. A comprehensive analysis of 98 studies published between 1984 and 2023 reported 41 major invasive plants spread across 54 PAs in 09 Biogeographic Zones of India. Studies on the ecology and management of invasive plant species accounted for 35% of the total studies, while on impacts of invasive species on the ecosystem and newly emerging invasive species were limited. The Western Ghats and Deccan Peninsula Biogeographic Zones of India accounted for highest publications on invasive plant species. Fabaceae and Asteraceae were the dominant families; <i>Lantana camara</i> was the most widespread invasive species followed by <i>Prosopis juliflora</i>, <i>Chromolaena odorata</i>, <i>Parthenium hysterophorus</i> and <i>Mikania micrantha</i>. Based on the current understanding of plant invasion, it is crucial to understand (i) the patterns and extent of invasion (ii) ecological effects of invasive plant species on native flora, (iii) impacts of single versus multiple species invasions and their linkages to changes in plant and soil communities, and (iv) pathways and hotspots of invasion within PAs of the country.</p>
