Detecting the resilience, resistance, and elasticity concepts in the anthropocene epoch in complex urban ecosystems (Hyrcanian forests in Gorgan City-Iran)

In the Anthropocene epoch, where human activities have a significant impact on the environment focusing on understanding resilience, resistance, and elasticity concepts in the urban ecosystem is more important. Accordingly, for the first time, this study aims to quantify the concepts of elasticity, resistance, and resilience within the forest city of Gorgan using the GEE platform, climate indicators, the NDVI index, and mathematical calculations. Based on the findings, the resilience index in the study area decreased from 0.5 in 1985 to 0.3 in 2020. Bare lands exhibit the highest level of resilience, while urban lands have the lowest. A high level of this index indicates the ability of the ecosystem to quickly return to its equilibrium state and maintain performance in the face of disturbances. The resistance index within the study area has also decreased, with Hyrcanian forests displaying the lowest resistance at 0.1, while water and pasture cover showcase the highest resistance at 0.7. A higher resistance index suggests better preservation of ecosystem conditions against changes, while a lower index indicates increased sensitivity to disturbance factors. The elasticity index evaluates the ecosystem’s ability to respond to changes in ecosystem quality. Urban areas possess the lowest elasticity, while Hyrcanian forests exhibit the highest. A higher elasticity index identifies a more robust ecosystem with an enhanced capacity to recover from disturbance factors. These findings contribute to evaluating ecosystem sustainability, understanding changes in the urban ecosystem of Gorgan, and future planning for sustainable urban management.
