A Macro Perspective on BEV Adoption Dynamics: Comparative Analysis of Turkey and EU Countries

Electric vehicles (EVs) have the potential to reduce toxic gases, carbon emissions and other negative environmental effects. Regulating the market transition to EVs for governments will be one of the most important in the near future. This study uses two-stage DEA and Tobit regression models to measure and analyze the battery electric vehicle (BEV) adoption efficiency of Turkey and 10 EU countries from 2017–2022. Additionally, the efficiencies of countries are clustered via cluster analysis to identify the group of countries that have the same or similar policies on BEV. The results verify that lower-scale countries are more efficient in terms of the BEV adoption process. It is also revealed that large-scale countries followed different strategies and policies in this process. The generation of renewable electricity capability, the number of charging units per person and the import-to-export ratio, as indicators of economic power, are observed to be factors that positively affect efficiency.
